Transit planning can be challenging and requires continuous refinement of services. This process entails regular engagement with the community, often involving transit surveys. These surveys may be completed by a single transit provider, through a regional organization, or even through a state or federal agency.
To support transit planning and major transit projects in the Triangle region, the most recent Transit Onboard Survey was completed in fall 2023. These onboard surveys are typically conducted every 10 years, with the previous one completed in 2014.
The 2023 survey includes data from transit providers across the Greater Triangle area and features information on rider demographics (e.g., age, primary language), trip origins and destinations, and travel behavior metrics such as average transfers and walk access.
