To support transportation planning in the Triangle region and enhance the Triangle Regional Model (TRM), the Triangle Travel Surveys (HTS) have been conducted biennially since 2018. Prior to that, Triangle Travel Surveys were completed in 1995, 2006, and 2016. Data collection was delayed in 2020 due to COVID-19 and resumed in spring 2021, followed by subsequent rounds in 2022 and 2024. In addition, a Transit On-Board Survey was conducted in 2023.

2026 Triangle Travel Survey Now Open
The N.C. Department of Transportation, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization have launched the Triangle Travel Survey to better understand how residents travel across the region. The information collected will help shape future transportation investments throughout the greater Triangle region.
Why It Matters
This survey helps planners design safer, more efficient transportation systems that reflect real-world travel patterns and support long-term goals like reducing congestion, improving air quality, and strengthening economic growth across the Triangle.
