Unified Planning Work Program

The Triangle West TPO is required by federal regulation to prepare an annual Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) that details and guides urban area transportation planning activities. Funding for the UPWP is provided on an annual basis by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The UPWP uses FHWA task codes to identify TPO planning tasks to be undertaken with the use of federal transportation funds, including highway and transit programs, data collection, planning projects, and elements of longer-term plans, such as the Metropolitan Transportation Plan.

The UPWP Prospectus outlines the scope of work to be undertaken by the TPO. It illustrates the relationship between adopted TPO goals, objectives, and programmed activities in the UPWP, and serves as a management tool for planning and coordination. The UPWP Prospectus was most recently updated and approved by the Board on November 10, 2021.

The UPWP planning process begins in May for the upcoming year, when the TPO coordinates with all jurisdictions on cost estimates to implement desired planning activities.  Public engagement is also prioritized as a part of this process.

FY2026 UPWP

The TPO Board approved the FY202 UPWP during their meeting on November 19, 2024, and it will become effective at the start of the fiscal year on July 1, 2025. Work outlined in the FY2026 UPWP will be conducted from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. 

FY2025 UPWP 

The TPO Board approved the FY2025 UPWP during their meeting on March 26, 2024, and it will become effective at the start of the fiscal year on July 1, 2024.  Work outlined in the FY2025 UPWP will be conducted from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.

FY2024 UPWP

The TPO Board approved the FY2024 UPWP during their meeting on April 12, 2023, and it became effective at the start of the fiscal year on July 1, 2023.  Work outlined in the FY2024 UPWP will be conducted from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024.
