Triangle West TPO participated in the development and design of Alston Avenue Widening from NC 147 (Durham Freeway) to NC 98 (Holloway Street). The project additionally included sidewalks, a pedestrian walkway along the Pettigrew Street Bridge and bike lanes along the route along with a variety of additional pedestrian improvements along the corridor. Construction of the project was managed by NCDOT Division 5, and was funded by NCDOT, Triangle West TPO and the City of Durham. The project was bided to the Zachary Construction Company and construction was completed in September of 2024. NCDOT and Triangle West TPO (then DCHC MPO) fund the Alston Avenue Widening Project in the 2012-2018 Transportation Improvement Program with construction scheduled to begin in 2014 .

NCDOT holds public meetings with the local community to discuss needs on the Alston Avenue corridor.

1995- Initial Project Feasibility Study
In 1995 NCDOT conducted a Feasibility Study on potentially widening Alston Avenue between NC 147 and NC-98 as requested by Triangle West TPO (then the Durham Chapel-Hill Carrboro Transportation Advisory Committee)
