The J Branch Rail Trail Feasibility Study is examining the potential transformation of the rail corridor, also known as the State University Railroad or the J Line. The Norfolk Southern rail line is used to deliver coal to the UNC Co-Generation Steam and Power Plant (Co Gen Plant). The corridor is approximately 11 miles, spanning from the UNC Co Gen Plant on Cameron Ave, through downtown Carrboro and the western edge of Chapel Hill, through Blackwood Station in Orange County, to the spur rail line terminus at University Station just south of I-85 in Orange County.

The study will determine potential future uses for the corridor, exploring multimodal opportunities for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit. The study is being overseen by the Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization, the Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill, Orange County, UNC Chapel Hill, and North Carolina Railroad (NCRR).
